Hello BKL kids & parents –
We’re really looking forward to meeting all of you tomorrow (Jan. 19, 2011)…
Bill Koch – what is it?
The New England Bill Koch League’s (“NEBKL”) mission is to “introduce young people to the lifelong sport of cross-country skiing with all of its recreational, social, fitness, and competitive opportunities.” (The Bill Koch Youth Ski League Parent/Leader Manual, p. 5)
It is named after 1976 Olympic Silver medalist and Vermont native Bill Koch. BKL’s parent organization is the New England Nordic Ski Association (“NENSA”).
What to expect the first day
BKL meets from 3:30pm-5:00pm on Wednesdays. For veteran BKLers, some of the Wednesdays will offer opportunities to mix in some skate skiing and pre-race skills with Heather.
Kids, you should ask your parents to drop you off in the stadium. The Bill Koch instructors can help you bring your stuff inside and place your equipment on the rack.
During your time with your Bill Koch instructors, you can expect to spend a lot of time playing games and skiing and not much time standing around talking. We’ll play games like the Samurai, Hit the Deck!, the Hokey Pokey, and more…
We end our lesson time with a big game that all of the Bill Koch kids play – usually something like Sharks and Minnows. Parents, you’re free to pick your child up from this game time, if you wish. The official ending time of Bill Koch is 5:00pm.
How to dress & what to bring
Layer, layer, layer! Cross-country skiing is a sport that is highly aerobic so body warmth varies widely within a short time. Kids also need to be able to move their bodies easily, which makes traditional snowsuits really hard to ski in.
Top Layers
Thin shell – like a windbreaker
Sweater/vest/fleece
Track pants or thinner snow pants
Bulky snowpants are not recommended
Extra socks and gloves/mittens are recommended
Bottom Layers
Long underwear
Non-cotton thermal shirt
Non-cotton turtleneck
You should also bring a snack and something to drink.
The BKL Blog and Communicating Cancellations
In the event that we decide to cancel BKL lessons for the day, Heather will post this info on the Titcomb BKL Blog and send an email to parents before 12:30pm. If you do not have Internet connectivity - and we're aware of this - your child’s instructor will telephone you before our 3:30 meeting time.
Adult lessons
Stephen Davis will again be offering lessons to BKL parents on 1/26, 2/9, and 3/2. This is great opportunity for you adults to polish up your Nordic skills so that family ski jaunts can be as terrific as possible.
Think snow!

BKL Day #1 - Jan. 19, 2011 - will be a fun day!
Hooray! It's time for Titcomb BKL to meet for the first time for the 2011 season. All the BKLers out there in the greater Farmington area should be stoked; they have apparently impacted the snowstorm in a positive way.
This is my long way of saying that - because of the storm tonight - we will be able to have our first afternoon of Bill Koch League for the 2011 season tomorrow (January 19, 2011).
For those of you who are BKL veterans, I'm asking that you bring your skier directly to the stadium for equipment drop-off. We'll help him/her bring bags and snacks up to the lodge. [This is to avoid a traffic jam in front of the lodge that often happens when BKLers and Nana Webber skiers converge on Titcomb at the exact same time.]
Step 1: Drop your child's ski equipment at the stadium. [The photo with cars in it shows the easiest entrance to the arena. It is between the garage and the Northern Lights rental building.]
Step 2: Bring your child's bag to the Lodge and get your child ready. The Titcomb staffers will reserve a table for our group. It will be the first table on the left as you enter the fireplace room. It is quite likely that a few BKL parents will be around to help you find your way and get your child dressed.
Step 3: At 4:45 or thereabouts, you may come to the stadium to witness a whole bunch of kids playing silly games on skis. The arena is where the drop off and pick up for BKL days will typically take place.
See you then! :-) Heather
